The La Marque Fire Department honored resident Ben Keith with its Community Life Saver Award during the Sept. 14, 2026, City Council meeting, recognizing his actions to save a young man trapped in a burning vehicle.
On Aug. 28, Keith witnessed a vehicle leave the roadway, roll multiple times and catch fire. When he realized an injured occupant remained inside, he rushed to help despite the danger. Keith removed the victim from the wreckage and moved him to safety before first responders arrived.
The award ceremony became a particularly meaningful moment when the young man Keith rescued attended the meeting and personally thanked him. The ceremony also brought a separate connection full circle: One of the firefighters present was the same firefighter who helped save Keith’s life during a medical emergency about a year earlier.
The La Marque Fire Department created the Community Life Saver Award to recognize people who go above and beyond to preserve life during critical emergencies. Keith’s actions were recognized as an example of courage, selflessness and commitment to others.
The City of La Marque congratulated Keith for the recognition and thanked him for helping a fellow community member during a life-threatening emergency.
