Galveston residents are invited to attend the second Community Workshop for the city’s Comprehensive Plan update on Thursday, October 15, from 3 to 7 p.m. The workshop will be held at the Historic Galveston Water & Electric Light Community Center, 715 30th Street, Galveston.
The Comprehensive Plan update is intended to guide future decisions about growth, development, infrastructure, housing, transportation and other community investments. One key outcome will be a Future Land Use Map, which will help shape where and how growth is prioritized in the coming years.
During the first community workshop, participants identified protecting Galveston’s natural resources as the most important goal for the community’s future. Other priorities focused on quality-of-life issues, including improving infrastructure, maintaining neighborhood character, making housing more affordable, expanding transportation options and balancing the needs of residents and visitors.
The city is encouraging residents of different ages and backgrounds to participate in the next workshop and help broaden the range of perspectives included in the planning process.
“Galveston is a diverse community with many different experiences, priorities, and ideas about the future,” City Manager Brian Maxwell said. “The workshop gave us an important starting point, but there are many voices we have not yet heard. We want to continue expanding participation and ensure more residents can help shape the plan.”
Residents who cannot attend the workshop can also participate through a “meeting-in-a-box” toolkit. The toolkit allows organizations and residents to host their own discussions and submit feedback to the city. Printed copies are available for pickup at City Hall.
Residents may also complete activities and provide feedback through the project’s online engagement platform. The deadline for online participation is October 2. Information and participation opportunities are available through the Galveston Comprehensive Plan engagement platform.
