As families across League City fire up their grills for summer cookouts and holiday celebrations, the League City Fire Department is reminding residents to practice safe grilling habits to help prevent fires and injuries.
Grilling is one of the most popular ways to prepare meals during the summer, but officials warn that grills placed too close to homes, decks, or other combustible materials can quickly become a fire hazard.
The League City Fire Department encourages residents to follow these important safety tips before and during every barbecue:
- For propane grills, check the gas tank for leaks before use in the months ahead. (Watch NFPA’s video on how to check for leaks)
- Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and the trays below.
- Place the grill well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
- Always ensure your gas grill lid is open before lighting the grill.
- Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grilling area.
- When using starter fluid for charcoal grilling, only use charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. When you have finished grilling, let the coals cool completely before disposing of them in a metal container.
- Never leave your grill unattended when in use.
The department says following these simple precautions can help ensure summer gatherings remain safe and enjoyable for everyone.
