The Galveston Independent School District Board of Trustees met on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, for its regular monthly meeting. Below are the key highlights and actions taken.
Board Votes to Continue Legal Fight Against Posting 10 Commandments
The Board reaffirmed its decision to continue opposing the required posting of the 10 Commandments in public school classrooms. Trustees noted that the state mandate conflicts with federal law and longstanding constitutional interpretations. GISD leaders expressed disappointment that district resources must be used to defend the issue in court but emphasized that legal counsel will continue to advise the district as pending litigation proceeds.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit is expected to hear the case in January. Until then, GISD remains committed to ensuring student safety and well-being while maintaining its current legal stance.
The meeting also included the swearing-in of David H. O’Neal, Jr., and Mindy Lakin for new three-year terms. Additionally, the Board elected Anthony Brown, Johnny Smecca, and Mindy Lakin to officer positions.
