Students from Burnet Elementary’s STREAM Magnet program are making a difference in the community through hands-on learning and service. Recently, members of the school’s Student Council visited the Galveston Island Humane Society to learn more about animal care and support local efforts.

During the visit, students toured the facility and gained insight into the daily operations involved in caring for animals in need. From feeding and medical care to adoption services, the experience gave students a deeper understanding of the responsibilities and compassion required to run a humane society.

The visit also served as an opportunity for students to connect classroom learning with real-world impact. Through their STREAM-focused education, students explored how science, empathy, and community service intersect in meaningful ways.

A highlight of the day was meeting some of the shelter’s animals, giving students a firsthand look at the importance of providing safe and loving environments for pets awaiting adoption.

In addition to learning, Burnet students gave back by delivering donations collected from the school community. Items such as pet food, supplies, and other essentials were generously contributed, reflecting strong support from families and staff.

School leaders say experiences like this help foster a sense of responsibility and community awareness among students at a young age. By engaging in service projects, students not only learn valuable life lessons but also build connections that extend beyond the classroom.

The Burnet Elementary community continues to demonstrate that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
